Two players take on the personas of French politicians attempting to survive the Reign of Terror. During their turns, they can either purchase a card from the selection, play a card from their hand onto their Tableau, or utilize a card already in their Tableau.

Certain market purchases trigger the purging of cards in players' tableaus and result in points being earned. The game ends when one player reaches 21 points or if neither player reaches that point before the third crisis, both are caught in the Thermidorian Reaction and meet their fate at the guillotine.
